Some of my favorite forms of expression are assemblage, photomontage, and decoupage – all rooted in the art of collage. Collage of dimensional materials is generally referred to as assemblage, and collage of photographs or images, as photomontage. These techniques all provide an opportunity to extract, layer, and juxtapose information such as color, form, and meaning.
This year I was awarded a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts | Works on Paper Category. With this grant I decided to explore an idea that I had long been considering. Having established a reputation for extracting, repositioning, and layering a variety of materials – in both works on paper and sculpture, I wanted to create a series of “dimensional collage”. Collage that combine flat and sculptural information. More importantly, it was paramount to thoughtfully consider the arrangement, or placement in “frameworks” that simultaneously contain and liberate wall-mounted artwork, and successfully obscure the distinction between collage and assemblage.
A selection from this series of dimensional collage will be on exhibition at the Delaware Opera House | Grand Gallery. Opening reception Friday February 7, 2020. This exhibition was made possible by a generous grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts.
